In this blog, we share how that training can change the lives of people of all ages.

Understanding the Distinct Needs of Each Age Group

  • First Aid For Adults

When providing First Aid to adults, certain considerations come into play. Adults have fully developed bodies, and the primary focus is often on addressing immediate life-threatening conditions like CPR for cardiac arrest, handling severe bleeding and stabilising fractures.

When an adult is choking, the Heimlich manoeuvre is commonly used to dislodge the obstructing object. Due to their larger size and stronger abdominal muscles, a firmer upward thrust is usually required to expel the blockage effectively. In a choking emergency with an adult, the rescuer stands behind the person, wraps their arms around the waist, and delivers forceful upward abdominal thrusts.

Performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on an adult requires a different technique than that used for children and infants. The rescuer places the heel of one hand on the centre of the person’s chest, with the other hand on top, interlocking fingers. The chest is compressed at least 5 cm deep and at a rate of 100 to 120 compressions per minute.

  • First Aid For Children

Children have unique physiological differences that require specialised attention in emergencies. By choosing a course that highlights vital aspects, such as paediatric CPR techniques, managing choking incidents and dealing with common childhood injuries, you will have training that enhances your work opportunities.

Performing CPR on a child differs from adult CPR, considering the anatomical and size variations. For children over one year of age, the rescuer typically uses one hand to compress the chest, as opposed to the two hands used for adults. The compression depth is also adjusted, aiming for less than 5 cm. Additionally, rescue breaths are delivered more gently to avoid overinflating the child’s smaller lungs.

  • First Aid For Babies

Infants, being more delicate, demand special care during emergencies. The training focuses on infant CPR, ensuring proper support for a baby’s airway and handling incidents like choking or allergic reactions. Mastering these skills is indispensable for parents, babysitters and anyone involved in caring for babies.

Babies have delicate structures that require highly specific consideration during CPR. The technique for infant CPR involves using two fingers rather than the full hand to deliver chest compressions. The depth of compressions is also shallower, aiming for about 3.5 to 4 cm, to accommodate the size of the infant’s chest. Rescue breaths are administered more gently, using minimal force to avoid causing harm.
