The Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course is conducted over 2 consecutive days and delivered by an accredited MHFA Instructor. The course is designed to teach adults (18 years and over) how to provide initial support to adults who are developing a mental illness or experiencing a mental health crisis.
Upon successful completion of the MHFA course, participants will do an online multiple-choice assessment with mhfa.com.au to receive a certificate.
Mental health problems can affect anyone in the community and inaccurate and stigmatising attitudes towards people with mental illness are common. According to recent studies, 20% of Australian adults experience mental health issues, and only 35% of them receive professional help.
Many people have a lack of knowledge, skills and confidence to support a friend, family member or co-worker experiencing a mental health problem, including how to approach someone and start a safe conversation.
Mental health problems covered:
- Depression
- Anxiety problems
- Substance use problems
- Psychosis
Mental health crises Situations covered:
- Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
- Non-suicidal self-injury
- Panic attacks
- Traumatic events
- Severe effects of alcohol or other drug use
- Sever psychotic states
- Aggressive behaviours
Encouraging early help-seeking is one way to promote a mentally healthy workplace. MHFA covers the following topics:
- What are mental health problems and mental health crisis
- What are the signs and symptoms of common and disabling mental health problems in adults
- How to approach them and provide initial help
- What sort of help is proved to be effective
- Where and how to get professional help
- How to provide first aid in a crisis
After the course completion, participants can opt for Mental Health First Aider Accreditation through Mental Health First Aid Australia.
Participants must be at least 18 years old.To successfully complete the MHFA course, participants need to:
- Bring one photo ID
- Create USI (see information below)
