Please note that completion of the TC1 Traffic Controller RIISS00058 Skill Set for Urban Streets and Low Volume Rural Roads and at least 40 hours of experience in a temporary traffic management workplace are required to attend this course.

TC2 Advanced Traffic Control Training Overview

Course Code RIISS00059

RIISS00059 Traffic Controller Skill Set for High Volume Roads is delivered and Statements of Attainment are issued by Edway Training Pty Ltd (RTO 91401).

Edway Training is accredited by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) and approved by Austroads and the Department of Transport and Planning Victoria to deliver this skill set.

The training complies with the Austroads Guide to Temporary Traffic Management and the VicRoads Worksite Traffic Management (WTM) Code of Practice.

Course Information

Skill Set Overview

This skill set equips individuals with the essential skills and knowledge for traffic control in Temporary Traffic Management (TTM) Category 2 environments, including high volume roads.

Advanced Traffic Controller 2 (TC2) provides skills for safely controlling traffic on high volume roads. The training includes communication, risk management, worksite set up and management, emergency responses and record maintenance.

Pathways

Completing the TC2 course provides credits towards recognised qualifications such as RII30920 Certificate III in Civil Construction and Other Certificate II and III Qualifications.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

We offer RPL Assessment against Austroads TTM program requirements, including a challenge test.

Expiry

The Traffic Controller 2 training is valid for three years from the date of completion. To maintain certification, a refresher course is required every three years.

Training Prerequisite

  • Completion of the Traffic Controller TC1
    Learners must have successfully completed this skill set RIISS00058 Traffic Controller Skill Set for Urban Streets and Low Volume Rural Roads, which covers the basic skills and knowledge required for traffic control in less complex environments.

  • Practical Experience
    Learners must have at least 40 hours of practical experience working in a temporary traffic management workplace in a traffic controller role.

Training Outcome

After successful completion of all assessment requirements, you’ll receive a Statement of Attainment and a Digital Training Card with the skill set:

  • RIISS00059 Traffic Controller Skill Set for High Volume Roads

with the unit of competency:

  • RIIWHS207 Control traffic on high volume roads

Course Structure

This course combines theoretical and practical components in a classroom setting. It is delivered over two training days:

  • Stage 1:
    Theoretical instruction for TC2 skill set.
  • Stage 2: Post theoretical training practical experience
    Participants are required to complete a minimum of 20 hours practical training in real-world traffic management environments under the supervision of qualified and licensed professionals. This must be completed after the theory based learning and before the final practical assessment
  • Stage 3:
    Practical application and assessment. Practical training is conducted in a simulated environment.

Assessment

The assessment requirements for the TC2 course include:

  • Theory Assessments
    Multiple-choice questions, short answer questions and case studies to test understanding of theoretical concepts
  • Practical Assessments
    Real-world simulations, hands-on tasks to evaluate practical skills and competence
  • Post-theoretical course Practical Training
    Participants must complete a minimum of 20 hours in a temporary traffic management workplace, conducted in real or simulated environments. This includes setting up traffic control devices, directing traffic, managing pedestrian and cyclist controls, and handling lane and shoulder closures.

    Participants must maintain a logbook of activities, verified by a supervisor. Practical assessments are conducted in live traffic scenarios and must be completed within six months of the theoretical component.

    This can be completed at the participant’s place of employment. If the participant is not employed, Edway Training has arrangements with approved traffic management companies to facilitate the completion of the required practical elements.

Course Requirements

Identification & Age

According to the Department of Transport Victoria requirements, participants must be at least 18 years old.

Participants must provide one form of photo I.D. (e.g. passport, Australian driver’s licence, proof of age card, student card).

STATEMENT OF ATTAINMENT WILL NOT BE ISSUED if participants do not provide a valid form of I.D.

Attendance

Participants should arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled starting time of the course to complete the necessary registration paperwork.

ENTRY TO THE COURSE WILL BE REFUSED if participants arrive 15 minutes after the scheduled starting time.

Clothing and PPE

To safely perform practical activities, participants are required to wear comfortable closed-in shoes and bring PPE, such as steel capped boots, broad brimmed hat, glasses, long pants and long sleeves.

THE TRAINER RESERVES THE RIGHT TO REFUSE ENTRY TO THE CLASS if appropriate clothing is not worn.

LLN (Language, Literacy and Numeracy)

The basic understanding, reading and writing of English is required.

As part of our pre-training review all students are required to complete an LLN assessment to determine a student’s eligibility for enrolment into their selected course.

All students enrolling into any Edway Training course must have LLN skills to do simple calculations, understand English well enough to be able to read, write, and provide verbal responses to questions in English to undertake training and assessment in any of our courses.

To enroll in the TC2 course, students must meet the following requirements:

  • Hold the Skill Set RIISS00058 “Traffic Controller Skill Set for Urban Streets and Low Volume Rural Roads”
  • Provide a Statement of Attainment as proof of completion
  • Must have completed at least 40 hours of experience working in a temporary traffic management workplace in a traffic controller role.
